SITE: This site is located at the southern edge of Dorchester, just off the A35(T), which heads west and
north-east, by-passing the town. The site is close to the A354, which heads north (as the B3147) into the
centre of Dorchester and south towards Weymouth. Other local roads head south towards the village of
Winterbourne Herringston and north towards the town centre.
To the south of the site is open land, whilst in other directions there is residential development. At the site's
western boundary are railway lines heading north and south.
The Hail & Ride bus route runs from the north of the site (on Herringston Road) to the town centre.
The site has a main entrance and a delivery entrance, both off Herringston Road.
Population figures were taken from the Dorset Data Book 2002, and the car ownership figure was taken
from the 1991 Census.
WINTERBOURNE HOSPITAL: This is a BMI Healthcare hospital. Facilities include out patients clinics (including a
physiotherapy section), and a fertility unit which opened in 1996. Since the previous survey in
1990, the hospital has been extended. This has increased the Gross Floor Area and the number
of beds. The number of staff has also increased.
Nursing shifts are generally 0700-1430, 1330-2100, and 2100-0800. Reception and admin staff
work from around 0900 to 1700, and caretaker/security working hours are 2200-0830.
Some 65 consultants use the hospital and generally visit between 0800 and 2200. There are no
admin staff at weekends, just reception staff.
The opening times shown are for clinics. Visiting times are open, and visitors usually leave by
2100. Occasionally there are clinics on Sunday mornings, but not on the Sunday during these
surveys.
Of the 140 employees, 60 are full time and 80 are part time.
Off-site parking takes place on-street on Herrington Road, adjacent to the delivery entrance at
the site. There is space for approximately 8 cars, and any parking of this nature (for the use of
the hospital) is included in the survey counts. On weekdays, staff are fined if they park in the
visitors car park. The staff car park is usually over capacity during the week, hence the need to
park on the street outside.

(RMO's) are in attendance, with specialist RMO's in areas such as ICU and Acute Stroke.
The opening hours shown are clinic and visiting times.
Parking is limited at both sites, with only space for deliveries and some consultant parking. The
nearest National Car Park is in Kingsmill Terrace, and on cricket-free days, Lords offers parking
facilities. There are also parking metres in the streets surrounding the hospital. All on-site and
off-site parking for use of the site is included in the survey.
