Using the system

TRICS® is the system that challenges and validates assumptions about the transport impacts of new developments.

What is TRICS®?
TRICS® is the system that challenges and validates assumptions about the transport impacts of new developments. It is the national standard system of trip generation and analysis in the UK and Ireland, and is used as an integral and essential part of the Transport Assessment process.

It is a database system which allows its users to establish potential levels of trip generation for a wide range of development and location scenarios, and is widely used as part of the planning application process by both developer consultants and local authorities. There are currently over 500 office locations in the UK and Ireland that are registered as TRICS® users.

How is it managed?
The system is marketed and managed by JMP Consultants Limited on behalf of the TRICS® Consortium of 6 County Councils:

Surrey Kent
East Sussex Hampshire
West Sussex Dorset

What does TRICS® contain
TRICS® contains nearly 6,000 transport surveys at a wide range of development types across all regions of the UK and Ireland. The individual site records contain comprehensive, detailed information on a site’s local environment and surroundings, the composition and functions of a site, its on-site and off-site parking facilities, and hourly, directional transport count results covering a wide range of transport modes. Annual data collection programmes ensure that new transport surveys are added to the database every three months.

A system of site selection filtering enables users to simulate site scenarios through a number of progressive and user-friendly stages, and to calculate vehicular and multi-modal trip rates based on these selections. The system includes an easily-accessible directory of help files to assist users in their understanding of the database and its operations, as well as an on-line Help Desk facility.

What is the best way to use TRICS®
Good practice guidance has been produced which should be used for reference by both TRICS® member and non-member organisations when dealing with data produced by TRICS®. You can view the current version of the TRICS® Good Practice Guide HERE.
